Type of Therapy
My Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach
As a psychotherapist I practice with the assumption that therapy can be a rich and vital exploration into understanding the complex barriers and patterns that get in the way of living the life we want to lead. These barriers and patterns (symptoms) can take on many forms: anxiety, depression, unexplained physical illness or pain, addiction, rage, even feelings of strangeness and unreality. In addition, these symptoms can affect any area of life including relationships, work, creativity, and sexuality. In order for these patterns and barriers to be understood they must have an open and safe place to be expressed. With good communication and trust building between client and therapist, the therapeutic environment becomes this open and understanding space. In order to know what to do about our problems and for lasting change to take place, a dimensional exploration into the core of our problems is essential. The timing for this is different for everyone but eventually the discovery process into these patterns and barriers -- and therefore into ourselves, has the potential to lead to exciting, healthy change.
Therapeutic Style
It has been my experience as a psychotherapist that there are many doorways available to us for a better understanding of ourselves. These doorways often include exploring our historical past and how we are affected by it today; expressing our day-to-day experiences of ourselves and others around us; sharing our night and day dreams; understanding our experiences within the therapeutic relationship; and listening closely to deep down thoughts and feelings that haven’t yet been openly expressed. I utilize talk therapy as a powerful way to explore these doorways (and pathways). I also help those who are interested in developing and integrating the practices of meditation and/or qigong into their everyday lives. In addition to this, I work closely with several types of healing professionals which include 5 element acupuncture, oesteopathy and massage therapy. These healing methods are often quite supportive to the therapeutic process and emphasize the whole body/self system. You and I would spend time developing a specific treatment plan for your particular needs.
Therapeutic Modalities
I have been trained in both long and short-term therapies. These include Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Jungian therapy, and Cogbitive Behavioral Therapy. The beginning of therapy is often spent discussing your needs and goals and what kind of therapy might best suit these needs and goals. If you have other specific questions regarding my style of psychotherapy, you are welcome to call me so that we can further dialogue by voice.
Clinical Supervision
I provide clinical supervision to mental health professionals. If you are interested in exploring this possiblitiy with me you are welcome to call or email.
